Spotting fake scouts: how to stay safe

People who want to model are sometimes targeted by fake scouts and agencies. A few simple checks protect you.

Warning signs

  • They ask for money up front — for registration, a "portfolio package", a course or a place on a website. A real agency earns commission from work it books for you.
  • They ask for ID or bank details over social media or chat before you have met or signed anything.
  • They contact you from a personal account or a free email address rather than the agency's own domain.
  • They push you to decide fast or to keep the offer secret.
  • They ask for revealing photos or want to meet somewhere private. A fashion agency does not need nude or lingerie photos to assess you.

How to check

  1. Find the agency's official website yourself, not through a link someone sent you.
  2. Contact the agency directly using the details on that site and ask whether the person works there.
  3. Look for a physical address, clear legal pages and a real application process.
  4. Talk to someone you trust before you agree to anything.
